HHS marks $650 million for wellness initiative

The HHS has announced a $650 million prevention and wellness initiative, with funding from the federal stimulus law.

Communities can apply for $373 million in grants for programs that will improve physical activity and nutrition and lower obesity and smoking rates. The initiative, called Communities Putting Prevention to Work, will be led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

About 30 to 40 communities will be awarded the two-year grants through a competitive selection process, officials said. The cooperative agreements will support evidence-based prevention strategies and promote partnerships across communities. The remainder of the funds will be made available to states, territories and organizations to support, extend and evaluate the reach of the community projects.

The deadline to apply for the community grants is Dec. 1, with more information at www.grants.gov.
